The Coming Of The Lord
Throughout
the years there has been a lot of discussion among those who identify as “Christians”
as to the validity of honoring Christmas.
Some groups have invested a lot of time and energy in bringing
significance to December 25 as a religious holiday while others have shied (or
run) away from it. Even among our own brethren
the debate continues today – do we celebrate the season or not? If we choose to participate, is it okay to
place religious significance on the day or can we merely participate in the
social aspects of season? Do we gather
around a Christmas tree or nativity scene?
While
I see the legitimacy of both sides of the argument, there is one thing that we
should all agree on – Jesus cannot be left in the manger. There is something wonderful about the story
of Jesus being born of a virgin, wrapped in swaddling clothing and placed in
manger; but apart from the rest of His life there would be no gospel. The miracles surrounding Jesus’ birth provide
a great beginning, yet without the next 30-plus years it is unfulfilling. The book of Isaiah contains several Messianic
prophecies and is often a point of reference during the holiday season, but
look at how his message does not end in a barn in Bethlehem:
For
a child will be born to us, a son will be given to us; and
the government will rest on His shoulders; and His name will be
called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Eternal Father, Prince
of Peace. There
will be no end to the increase of His government or of peace, on
the throne of David and over his kingdom, to establish it and to uphold it
with justice and righteousness from then on and forevermore. The zeal of the Lord of hosts will
accomplish this. (Isaiah 9:6-7)
This prophecy doesn’t stop with the coming of the Son, it highlights the
presence of His power. Jesus, the Baby,
is only the beginning of Jesus, the King!
The excitement of His birth is supplemented by the enthusiasm of the
Lord at His triumph. We must be thankful that Jesus was born and we can be
intrigued by all the circumstances surrounding the story of His birth. We should even relish the proclamations made
by the angels, heavenly beings and wise men at the beginning of His life on
earth. Yet, without the complete life,
death, resurrection and ascension of Jesus, His birth merely makes interesting
reading. Without His perfect life, His
incredible birth fails to accomplish His mission.
Whether you choose to celebrate the birth of Jesus or merely enjoy the
festivities of the Holiday Season, Jeane and I would like to wish you love, joy
and goodwill. You are a blessing to us
and our family. Your presence in our
lives is an incredible gift to us. We
praise God for allowing us to be part of your family and thank you for all you
do. Happy Holidays!
